A sheet of paper, a poster, a roadmap, a game changer, a vision board!
Crafting has probably never brought you so much added value. Sometimes such a simple thing can have a big impact. In this article you will learn why you should start creating a vision board today. Plus, there are best practices and lots of inspiration towards the end of the article.
What is a vision board?
A vision board, also called a dream board or motivation board, is used to motivate and visualize goals for a long-term period, such as a year, for example.
You create your goals and wishes for the period you have defined in the form of images and texts. You should then place this board where you see it again and again and in this way get reminded of what you are working towards.
Why do I need such a board?
Process of thinking about goals
The bottom line is that it’s about more than just the vision board itself. It’s about the process of creating it, engaging with your goals, and playing through different paths in your mind. When was the last time you really grappled with this? Big goals are easy to imagine, but they seem so far away and thinking about them alone doesn’t really help you achieve them. However, if you think about what is possible in a year, for example, and set achievable goals based on that, it’s a different story. The biggest advantage of thinking these things through is that by weighing the feasibility, in the best case scenario, you’re also thinking about HOW you’re going to get there. With a concrete plan, you are more likely to celebrate success.
Visualize clear goals
We all have goals in our heads but how often have you really put your goals on paper in the form of text and pictures? When you really write down CLEAR goals, you see them with different eyes. It is no longer just a nice idea or a nice thought, but a real thing that you have decided to work towards at that moment.
The most important thing about a vision board? You and also as many other people (guests) should see this board. This way you come out with your goals and reinforce the idea that this is not just a nice craft/design work, but your real goals.
Apart from other people, it is of course also extremely motivating for yourself to show your Dreams-Roadmap again and again.
Hopefully, the things presented on the vision board will soon become reality, because then the next benefit of a motivation board will come into play: Namely, being reminded not only of your goals, but also of your successes!
Then, at the end of the year, when you’ve achieved almost all of your goals, you’ll be reminded again and again how far you’ve actually come. For the most part, only the good parts of life are shown on social media these days. Always on vacation, new watch, new car, etc…. It’s made to feel like everyone else around you is better off than you. This often creates an inner turmoil and negative mood. For this reason, a Dream Board like this comes in handy to remind you how far you’ve come and how good you actually have it.
How do I create a vision board?
In general, there are no rules. There are no limits to your imagination.
However, these points are useful in any case:
Pictures, pictures, pictures
With pictures you can make your vision board beautiful in a simple way. You can also get specific with pictures, for example, by showing the exact car you plan to buy on your dream board.
Very little text
do without long stories over the whole page. Rather work with keywords and numbers, e.g. 10,000 followers or 2 times a week at the gym.
Write down what motivates you. This can be, for example, your life motto, an inspiring quote or a paragraph from your favorite book.
Sometimes different goals are directly or indirectly related. Connect these things in your own way and create an even more interesting layout.
What to put on the Dream Board?
Again, you determine what should be placed there. As a little help: Think about different areas in life. This will make your vision board more diverse and help you define your goals. For example, write down wishes for the following areas:
Digital or Analog?
In any case in physical form! It doesn’t matter if you make your board digitally or directly on paper/pin board/etc.. Some people have more fun with handicrafts, others feel more comfortable with digital graphic design.
Useful: digital version as wallpaper
If you decide to go digital — you could possibly put your board into a wallpaper format for your PC or smartphone. This way you can always keep an eye on your vision board
What to look out for?
How does your vision board work best? Consider the following points and you are already well on your way.
Do not see your Dream Board as a lucky charm that passively helps you to fulfill your wishes. To achieve your goals you have to become active and take action.
What wouldn’t you like to have — preferably right now? Make sure to keep your list within limits. Too many to-do items will result in too many unfinished items.
So you miss the point by demotivating yourself with the open items.
Clear plans are good, but too much planning can backfire. Set deadlines but have buffers ready. Otherwise you will hit those deadlines less often.
Don’t dig too deep with your plans. If you achieve all your goals in a few days/weeks, you haven’t taken full advantage of your motivation board. It’s called a VISION Board — so feel free to aim for bigger things.
Place your board where it can be easily seen, every day and preferably by your guests, your friends and your family. This will spur you on!
